BM, James Madison University, Vocal Music Education
I am a recent graduate of James Madison University (JMU) with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Music Education. Throughout my degree, I participated in many performance opportunities. I have sung in the Opera Scenes program at JMU and a student production of Iolanthe. I spent a month this summer in Sulmona Italy at the Center of Opera Studies in Italy performing in Suor Angelica, Elixir of Love and Don Giovanni. I'm passionate about helping students develop their voice and their love of music, while building strong relationships that help student grow to their full potential.
My teaching experience dates back three years in college. I participated in a program through my University that provides free lessons to students in the Harrisonburg area. My student from this program won $1000 scholarship to attend her dream University in Florida. I believe that all education starts with relationships. My students are important to me and through trust and mutual respect, we can accomplish so much! I encourage students to practice regularly. I assign technical exercises to help train the voices as well as repertoire. I specialize in classical music, and have a deep love of opera. However, I also am happy to coach musical theatre as well as pop music. Students of all ages are always welcome in my studio!
Each student is different. My teaching style depends on the need of the student. However, generally, I will start with technical exercises to help the student work on a particular skill that can be used in a variety of songs (ex. tone production, vowels, diction). Then the next part of the lesson would be focused on a particular song. I also am happy to work on music theory and music literacy skills with students. I think it is important for students to have choice within their lessons as well so I strongly believe in students getting to help select the music they are working on!
As a teacher, I always do my best to be as encouraging as possible to students. Student feedback is important to me. I always encourage students to ask questions and be engaged in their learning process. Together, my students and I will set goals for their learning and assess where we are in meeting those goals. This way, the students needs are met, and I can more accurately tailor my lessons to serve the student. I'm extremely excited when a student feels successful in their learning! Learning to sing is a personal process that requires a strong relationship between the teacher and student.
