I have taught private voice/piano lessons for the 5 years. I have experience teaching students from ages 10-65. When teaching any student at any level, I begin with fundamentals in order to better assess their skill level. As other techniques are introduced, I continue to reinforce the fundamentals. I encourage my students to practice every day and help them to set goals for their practice sessions throughout the week. My students are encouraged to bring music they enjoy singing and playing to their lesson. I assign music that will promote healthy singing/piano playing and engage and motivate my students to succeed.
My method is based on the individual singer. I always begin by introducing the fundamentals of singing (posture, breath, etc.) as these are commonly addressed in some way throughout a voice lesson. I begin every lesson with warm up exercises that relate to the music or technique that the student is currently working on. From there, we begin applying those techniques into the music. This gives the student practical applications to the technique they learned or reinforced in the beginning part of the lesson.
There is nothing more rewarding to me that seeing my student develop a passion of singing or overcoming a vocal concept. It is important that students progress at their own pace rather than comparing themselves to their friends and colleagues. I help them set goals for them on a weekly basis that will influence their own practice between lessons. I acknowledge my students' accomplishments, which encourages them to continue their progress and makes them eager to learn more. Each student is different, so I modify my instruction to their wants, needs, and long-term goals.
