I am an enthusiatic and experienced instructor and I want to share my passion with others. I graduated with my Bachelors of Music in Music Composition from Indiana University in 2004. In 2013, I graduated from the University of Redlands with a Masters degree in Guitar Performance. As well as being an experienced instructor, I am also a seasoned performer. I have an eclectic and extensive musical palette and have found myself performing in everything from classical guitar recitals as both a soloist and ensemble player, in pit orchestras, small jazz combos, folk music duos and pop music groups.
I began teaching in 2006, at a studio in Mishawaka, IN. I started with a handful of students and eventually had a studio of 50 students a week. I have worked with a variety of personality types and learning styles and have always customized my approach to meet each of my students individual needs and goals. I am a classical musician by education and trade, and I believe proper technique and training forms the basis for learning and working in any style of music. Above all, however, my goal is to help students attain new levels of personal satisfaction and self-fulfillment that comes with acquiring skills of musical expression.
I address every students individual needs with material that is suited for them. This may include traditional instructional materials such as the Mel Bay or Hal Leonard methods or even drafting my own materials for a particular students unique needs. I like to stress the importance music theory and notation to my students though I introduce these concepts at different times for different students, depending on their willingness and readiness to learn them. I am a very patient instructor and I remember vividly every challenge I faced as I developed musically and my ability to understand these challenges that students face helps me to find practically solutions to overcoming them.
In my musical instruction, I try to take a holistic approach. My goal is to help the student become a transmitter and reciever of music. In my lessons, I use ear training, music theory, motor skills, physical coordination and even singing to help students acquire a complete understanding of music making. As a teacher, nothing brings me more joy than to see my students accomplish more than they ever imagined they possibly could.
