I love teaching Voice and have a particular affinity for meeting the needs of the student. Every voice is unique, and should be treated as such with careful consideration. I instill pedagogical principles for healthy singing in all my students. I help students establish their goals/interests, and we achieve them through fun and engaging warm ups and appropriate repertoire.
I received a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance and taught at the Collegiate Level at The University of Alabama. As a 5th and 6th Choir and Drama Teacher at St. Andrew's Episcopal School (MS), I gained experience with younger voices and harmony. I studied piano and guitar for a year at Vanderbilt University, and currently work as a Singer-Songwriter in Nashville, TN.
My love for playing and learning about music began as a 5th Grader Trumpeter in the School Band. I transitioned to singing in Choirs and Musicals in High School and performed as a Church Cantor. I went on to study Vocal Performance at Vanderbilt University, where I discovered the joy of Songwriting on the Piano and Guitar. After college, I continued performing and teaching with The University of Alabama Opera Theatre. I had the privilege of being an Instructor of Class Voice (MUA 100) and Secondary Voice to Music Majors (MUA 234). A highlight of teaching 5th and 6th Grade Music at St. Andrew's was helping my students thrive in the musicals Dear Edwina Jr. and Annie. I now live in a world of music and am always learning, listening, exploring, and sharing with others.
I meet the student's needs and structure the curriculum accordingly. I have books and resources, as well as recommended YouTube videos to to prepare for lessons. I'm a proponent of Positive Feedback and have training in Responsive Classroom. Musicians are diverse learners, and it is essential to identify a student's learning style, best method of organization, and personal joy for music. Here are a few of my favorite Voice Pedagogy Books; The Performer's Voice by Meribeth Bunch Dayme The Functional Unity of The Singing Voice Second Edition by Barbara M. Doscher Securing Baritone, Bass-Baritone, and Bass Voices by Richard Miller Your Voice: the Basics Voice Science and Pedagogy by Scott McCoy
Music can be very complex, but it also can be very simple when broken down into parts. As a former soccer/football coach, I focus on mastery of the fundamentals thru consistency. The lesson is where you learn how to build the house, but it is in the short, concentrated bursts of daily practice that the most growth occurs. My instruction will give you the confidence and accountability to grow as a musician so that you can enjoy your craft as much as I do. I sincerely hope that you embark full force on your musical journey and wish you the very best!
