I'm a trumpet player in the Tampa/St Pete area looking to share my experience and love for trumpet with students. I have two degrees, a Bachelor's in Music Performance from Appalachian State University (2021) and a Master's in Music Performance from the University of South Florida (2023). I've performed internationally in seven countries as well as domestically in New York, New Orleans, and Universal Studios Orlando. I also perform locally for churches and pop groups. Though I am primarily a Lead trumpet player, I have experience in many setting including orchestras, wind ensembles, brass choirs/quintet, and many other classical settings.
I've been teaching since 2018. My teaching experience ranges from beginner to collegiate and I've taught as young as 8 and as old as 40. My initial goal is to create a connection with both the student and the family (family support it the best way to improve!). My teaching philosophy focuses on using personal experiences to relate to musical ideas (ex, breathe like you're jumping into a pool). Students often improve by themselves using practice techniques and analogies that are easy to remember.
For beginning students who are just picking up the horn, we focus on the very basics on how to make noises on it. Once they understand how it make sounds, we slow work on refining and controlling so we can actually learn to play! Older and more experienced students will learn how to make Music, not just playing the notes on the page. A lot of time goes into understanding musicality, so we will often listen to recordings, play together to find different way to express musical ideas, and take time to really understand and comprehend different music genres. The mental analogies will become more personalized, more in-depth, and effective to creating Music.
Beginning students will learn the essentials, often through a book. We will work together on focusing and controlling all the trumpet muscles and begin to develop good habits. The initial stages are crucial to developing a proper sound so they are set up for less complications in the future. Older and more experiences students will not only be learning music theory, but also how make Music out of notes. Applying personal experiences, analogies, and emotions into music can fester the most growth. If a student is able to connect with a piece of music, they're more likely to have the drive to improve it.
