Overview:
Singing is one of the most vulnerable forms of art. I strive to create an environment where the student can communicate and express freely while finding their own voice. I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience into the lessons I teach. I'm a lover of all types of music and have worked with singers of all ages and genres ranging from classical to contemporary. My focus is placed on not just creating great singers, but smart singers who understand what healthy vocal production is. I hold a Master of Music Degree from The San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music Degree in voice performance from Ithaca College. I'm proficient on guitar, piano, and ukulele. I'm a native of Middletown, PA and attended Middletown Area High.
EXPERIENCE
Before returning to PA in the summer of 2017, I taught Preschool-6th Grade general music in Richmond and Oakland, CA. Along with classroom teaching, I've taught voice, guitar, ukulele, piano and group music classes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm currently working towards a PA K-12 Education Certification. As a classically trained Tenor, I've performed numerous operatic roles ranging from “Rinuccio” in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi to “Apollo” in Monteverdi's L'orfeo. I have an affinity for Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and have spent three summers in Ithaca, New York performing with the Cornell Savoyards. In the summer of 2015 I attended the OperaWorks Advanced Artist Program in Los Angeles, CA.
METHODS USED
For Voice I cater my teaching to the student's goals and aspirations. The first 10-15 minutes of a lessons are spent doing vocal warmups and sightsinging exercises. The remaining time is spent working on repertoire that the student and myself choose together. For Piano I work out of the Faber Piano Adventure Books. These can easily be purchased on amazon after the first lesson. For continual progress, it's imperative that the student has a piano or keyboard at home to practice on. For Ukulele I supply my own lesson materials for ukulele. Tabs and staff reading are both covered as well as instrument care and maintenance. For continual progress, it's imperative that the student has a real ukulele to practice on. Most plastic and toy ukuleles cannot properly maintain intonation, making it frustrating for the student.
LESSON STYLE
My goal is to promote healthy singing habits that last a lifetime. I'm very passionate about sharing my love of music with all the students that I teach. Every voice is unique and specific achievable long term and short term goals need to be set accordingly. I don't believe in forcing one style of music onto my students. There interest are very important and goals are set together. There's many different styles of repertoire that can yield similar results. A well trained singer is able to cross over to multiple different styles and genres.
