I started singing recreationally of my own volition at age 5, coming up with improvised musicals in my parents' living room and filming them with my mom's camcorder. I took advanced choir classes in middle school and high school and was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for several rock bands throughout high school. I started learning guitar in 2006 and started learning piano in 2013. I am primarily a beginner-advanced voice teacher with secondary focus on beginner-intermediate piano and guitar. I am on the autism spectrum which makes me extra compassionate in how I like to teach and and fairly obsessive in how I like to learn. I love teaching music to students of all ages and backgrounds so if you identify as neurodiverse and think you would benefit from having a teacher who relates to that, I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
I started teaching at Shoreline Community College in their musical theatre department, leading vocal warm-ups and giving 1-on-1 coaching lessons to actors in their musicals while performing there myself. One of the greatest honors of my life was spending 2 years training under Juilliard-graduate Charles Enlow while at SCC. Since leaving college, I have worked on-and-off as a beginner-intermediate voice coach and piano/guitar teacher around the greater Seattle area. Since 2017 I have pursued by passion primarily as an affiliate music streamer on Twitch where I review full albums, perform covers of over 900 popular contemporary songs, learn new viewer-requested songs, and teach music online both on-stream and in private 1-on-1 discord calls.
There are SO MANY ways to start learning music, so I don't necessarily believe in forcing students to read sheet music of classic standards. I started out with chords and tabs in middle school and that has given me the ability to figure out most basic-intermediate songs by ear. I went on to learn to read sheet music in college and if reading music is something that interests the student, we will of course pursue that together. I prefer students come to me with contemporary songs they have interest in learning because it is so much easier to retain and develop a love for music when it's a song YOU want to learn. If a student doesn't have a song they want to learn at first, that's perfectly fine! I have a list of over 900 contemporary pop, rock, jazz, dance, musical theatre and video game songs that I am very familiar with for us to work on together. I will casually introduce and regularly reinforce music theory concepts to give the student a general understanding of what they are learning and how everything connects, enabling them with the ability to learn music by listening to a piece and reading rudimentary chords, as opposed to being locked in to only reading sheet music. Thanks to the power of the internet, it tends to be incredibly easy to find reliable sheet music, chords and YouTube videos that I can send the student home with to practice in their free time.
I put passion and enjoyment of the music above all else. I keep things casual, light and fun in terms of energy, but focused and diligent in terms of practice. I love finding the soul of the song and pulling out the passion of the student so that they are engaged and intrigued by whatever we're doing at all times. If it interests the student, I will integrate training on stage presence, energy and confidence in addition to actually learning the piece in front of them. I prefer to spend a lot of time finding out what the student wants to do as opposed to forcing them to learn something they consider boring. In my experience, many students give up on learning to sing and play music because a teacher or parent tells them there is only one way to go about it, and that simply is not true.
