Overview:
I have loved music from a very early age and I have been fortunate to study a variety of instruments and musical styles. I grew up studying the drums, piano, guitar, voice, and songwriting. I have been in a cover bands, original bands, jazz bands, choirs, a country band, a steel drum band, marching band, opera, a pop orchestra, a hip hop ensemble, and musical theatre productions. In college I took my studies further by learning music theory and aural skills while still performing in ensembles and writing lots of music. Now I teach and perform around Chicago! My studio is equipped with a keyboard, acoustic and electric guitars, and a cajon, as well as various percussion instruments.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching towards the end of high school and continued in college and beyond! I found it beneficial to be teaching students while still being a student myself. Having great teachers in my life has shaped my own approach to teaching. I discovered that when I was able to study what I was truly excited about, my capacity to learn and improve my craft increased exponentially! To that end, I encourage students to bring in original material as well as "covers" that they are interested in to build a repertoire. I find that this allows them to practice more which is such a big aspect of this journey. I am excited about teaching students of all ages and levels of experience!
METHODS USED
First I think it is important to get to know the student and chat about what their intentions are musically. Then I can customize a lesson plan for them which includes warming up, techniques, and repertoire. I sometimes find it helpful to discuss of elements music theory, aural skills, and reading music depending on the students desires in those areas. I strive to motivate students by picking material they are excited about. If the student is not enjoying the music, it is time to make adjustments!
LESSON STYLE
I love seeing my students excited about music. I like students to bring in music they feel passionate about so we can break it down and start to understand what makes it work. I find it important to set goals, adjust goals when things aren’t working and celebrate them when they are. Because of the great instruction I have had in my life, I understand the importance of being a teacher. I take great pride in helping my students succeed!
