2013 - High School Marching Band Invited to perform at the Rose Bowl Parade
Overview:
I am a music teacher at School of Rock in Haymarket looking to obtain some more students closer to home through Musika! I graduated from George Mason University with a BA in Music Technology and I have a lot of experience with music education. I have lived in NoVA my whole life and I am passionate about helping people with creative growth. :) I love teaching people of any age. and can teach the following:
Drums: Beginner - Intermediate/Advanced
Flute: Beginner - Intermediate/Advanced
Guitar: Beginner
Piano: Beginner
EXPERIENCE
First of all, I am someone who took formal private lessons for drums and flute from 5th grade all the way through college. I have been at School of Rock for about a year, where I am responsible for many individual as well as group lessons. I have taught a wide variety of ages ranging from 5-23, and I am extremely open to adult lessons. I am a firm believer that it's never too late to learn and that adults are more able to appreciate musical accomplishments. I am usually a very goal oriented teacher.
METHODS USED
I have started my own pedagogy when it comes to teaching drums but it is pretty straightforward. The first lesson is about basic technique and learning the drums and cymbals and then moving into being able to play a simple rock beat. I have done so many trial lessons at this point that I have it down to a science and I have a very good amount of kids who sign up afterwards. As far as books go we will work a lot with 1001 Drum Grooves by Steve Mansfield and more advanced students will use melodies from Gary Chester's "The New Breed," as well as drum compositions that I have put together for teaching and practice.
LESSON STYLE
I absolutely love getting students really excited about their instrument. I like to show videos of high level playing and introduce a wide variety of genres and styles while I find exactly what it is that inspires the student to play. My lesson structure normally consists of a warm up, rudiment/sticking work, reading or playing exercise and new concepts, then work on a song. I really try to get my students playing along with tracks so they can hear how drums sound in a band setting and apply it to their playing!
