I began music studies at an early age and quickly became an in demand musician among the local community of Jazz musicians in South Florida by my teens, performing often with Pianists Mike Gerber and Antonio Adolfo, and Multi-Instrumentalist and Be-bop great Ira Sullivan. Upon graduating high school, I relocated to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, where I studied with the legendary drummers Rakalam Bob Moses and Billy Hart, and studied composition and improvisation with pianist Anthony Coleman, Guitarist Joe Morris and composer Stratis Minakakis. Upon graduating the Conservatory in the spring of 2014 I remained in the greater Boston area until the summer of 2018, during which time I both remained active in the creative music scene as a performer and became busy working and teaching. Over those years, I was a part of the bands Aykroyd, Letter Castle, Particulars, Ryan Power, Los Greys, Every Kim Parcell, Listening Woman, and Creative Healing, among others. I just relocated to the NYC area this fall, and I am a passionate, encouraging, yet engaging and challenging instructor who loves teaching and values every student profoundly.
I have been teaching music in some capacity since I was in high school. At that time, I would teach younger kids who were interested in learning music. in 2015 however, I took on a full time schedule of music students, traveling to homes in the greater Boston area to teach. During this time, I taught students, both on Drums and Piano who ranged from very young beginning music students who had never played an instrument, to intermediate students and very skilled advanced students. I have experience as a performer playing many different styes of music, and I apply my versatility as a musician to my teaching, as I teach through the filter of whatever music excites and motivates the student to want to play the most! My students are encouraged to have the most fun possible learning music, while challenging themselves to work on performing at the highest level possible. I'm always looking to teach students of all ages, skill levels, experience, and backgrounds!
Because I teach such a wide variety of musical styles, my teaching style varies greatly from student to student. On Drums, I'm capable of teaching students up to extremely advanced professional level students, so I most often custom design my lesson plans based on the student's needs. I often will invent my own exercises for them, and also use many of the classic method books in the drum instructional canon of which there are simply too many to mention. On piano, for beginner students, I often start them on some of the primer level method books, either from the Faber and Faber "Piano Adventures" series or the Alfred beginning piano series and then transition to having the students learn music they want to learn and are excited about playing. I often will make custom transcriptions/arrangements of songs my students like that are especially designed for their skill level.
I approach teaching as a means to help the student develop their own relationship with music development. I firmly believe that all music students are their own best teachers, and a great teacher helps the student learn to discover themselves. With that in mind, I aim to help the student learn the fundamentals of their instrument, expose the student to new musical avenues and ideas that inspire them to work further, and challenge them to reach for new heights in their understanding and proficiency.
