Overview:
After graduating from the UC Irvine, I have been an active muscian in the Los Angeles music scene. I am a proffesional saxophonist and woodwind doubler and have played at many prostegious venues throughtout Southern California such as Catalina Jazz Club, the Blue Whale and Segerstrom Hall. I lead a modern jazz fusion band that has been featured on television and I am a sought after freelance musician due to my understanding of the Jazz and American musical tradition as well as my strong personal musical identity.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching in Highschool but recieved most of my formal experience during the four years of my undergrad education. During the past five years I have taught for UCLA, Mt. San Antonio College, Gymboree Play & Music and in my own private studio. These past years I have taught a wide array of individuals which has taught me and allowed me to grow into an educator that I can be proud of. Through UCLA I have worked with children with various developmental issues such as Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD. Through Gymboree I have taught children from the age of two months to five years as well as their parents. And through my own private music practice I have taught saxophone, flute, clarinet, musicianship, music theory and jazz theory to the middleschooler to the proffesional adult.
METHODS USED
I believe each indivdual deserves a teaching method that is as unique as their person. No two people are alike and as such no two individuals should be taught in the same manner. I take the student's musical interest and develop that interest into lesson plans that are both challenging and fun! There is so much music in the world to be explored and this music can be explored at any level! The common practice of teaching students out of method books can be bland, boring and ultimatley, counterproductive so I have developed methods to teach students through their own ear and for their own ear!
LESSON STYLE
I have been blessed with patient and understanding mentors throughout my musical career and so I too want to give that to my students! Every child and every adult should be treated as if they have the potential to be the next great Duke Ellington or Stravinsky; every individual has a mass of potential that is just waiting to be drawn out and that is what I look for. I don't try to make the student to conform to my standards. I try to see their potential and see what part of myself I can give to them inorder to help realize that potential. I find this especially important with children. Children are the most honest beings on this planet! They show you exactly who they are and as a teacher I must respect this, understand this and adapt to this to the best of my ablility!
