I am a passionate artist and teacher who loves working with students and helping them become the best musicians they can be! I graduated from Oklahoma City University’s Wanda L. Bass School of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre and a Bachelor of Music in Opera Vocal Performance. I have studied voice, music theory, piano and vocal pedagogy extensively. I have performed professionally around the country, most recently at Bigfork Summer Playhouse in Montana where I also taught children’s theatre classes and private voice lessons.
I discovered my love of teaching in college when I was required to teach voice lessons as an assignment for my vocal pedagogy class. I was amazed at how fulfilling it was to share my knowledge and love of singing with my students. Since then, I have had the opportunity to teach singers of varying ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. In addition to teaching private lessons, I have also taught music, theatre, and dance lessons in class settings at Oklahoma Children’s Theatre and Bigfork Children’s Theatre.
Since no two voices are exactly the same, I teach each student according to his or her specific age, needs, and goals. When teaching young or beginning singers, I start by working on foundational elements of vocal technique that are essential to healthy, beautiful singing such as posture, breath, support, and clear intonation. In lessons, my students and I use vocal exercises to strengthen the voice and build muscle memory. Then we work on applying technical concepts to music. I encourage students to work on songs that they love to sing. Learning to sing takes hard work and dedication but it should also be fun!
Nothing is more rewarding to me than playing a role in the artistic development of young singers. I love being able to help my students gain confidence in their abilities and reach their goals. One of my greatest goals as a teacher is to instill a lifelong love of music in each of my students. While singing takes practice and discipline, it should also be a lot of fun. I strive to create an encouraging environment where students can express themselves, embrace challenges, and not be afraid to make mistakes or try new things.
