Overview:
I grew up in the town Poughquag which is located in the Hudson Valley Region of Eastern New York. I am twenty-two and was raised in a musical household as the second youngest of six sisters and one brother. I recently attained my bachelor degree from SUNY Fredonia in violin performance with a minor in psychology, and will also be receiving my bachelor degree in music therapy from SUNY Fredonia after I've completed my internship at Monroe One Boces which goes from September, 2018 to June, 2019. I have been playing the violin since I was seven and have been playing the piano and the guitar since I was ten. I have been teaching those instruments since I was fifteen, and I love to play the autoharp and ukulele. I like to listen to, play, and teach all genres of music to the best of my ability. I believe in all the ways that music can be utilized in this world whether it be for educational and/or healing purposes.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio as well as private contracting studios. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of my key points I like to emphasize for students of all ages, as it tends to help the students progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter festivals, camps and performing events as well as work on their own composing, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
METHODS USED
I typically start violinists with the Suzuki method books and I start my piano and guitar students with the Alfred and Essential Elements books. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp on fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance. However, if a student isn't learning effectively from the book they were originally given, I either change the method book or compose my own exercises that I think the student would benefit from. Everyone has their own way of learning and I seek to acknowledge that as best as I can.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, i can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I also find it effective to incorporate music they like to listen to on a daily basis.
