Overview:
I grew up in a home filled with music and was exposed to a variety of musical genres and styles as I listened to numerous rehearsals between instrumentalists and singers in our home. I began piano lessons at 5 and never stopped. I hold many certificates from The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music, studied Piano Performance at Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts as well as Western European Music History at the University of South Florida. I teach piano, flute and music theory in a private studio setting and many of my students participate in the Music Certificate Program offered through The Royal Conservatory of Music, Canada.
EXPERIENCE
I am a passionate teacher dedicated to my students' success whether in local Festivals/Competitions or the Certificate Program Examinations held annually. My style of teaching varies with the abilities and learning styles of my students. I adopt multiple disciplines to help students understand the necessary skills and techniques required for playing in different genres while allowing them to develop a solid appreciation for music in all it's forms. Whether you are a beginner or have had a few years of lessons under your belt, I will meet you where you are and help you get to the next level on your musical journey.
METHODS USED
I am familiar with most method books on the market today and select books based on my students age and level of development when introducing them to piano or flute music. In addition to recitals my students that participate in local Festivals progress through the required levels smoothly as repertoire becomes more challenging. Likewise, my students that participate in the Certificate Program follow the syllabi set by the Royal Conservatory of Music. All my students become well rounded musicians because I incorporate scales and etudes, sight reading and ear training to their practical repertoire.
LESSON STYLE
My approach to teaching is one that engages students and encourages them to learn to the best of their abilities. I always consider the needs of my students and their wishes for their own musical development. Therefore, selecting repertoire and lesson goals is a joint venture between my students and myself. I gain encouragement when students voice their opinion and develop a sense of musical style that is unique to them; my students are motivated and learn to express themselves musically and together, we take great satisfaction in their successes at Festivals, competitions and examinations.
