I am a very versatile and easy going instructor who loves working with music enthusiasts of all age and ranges; I believe you are never too young or old to start learning an instrument. I recently graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and an Entrepreneurship minor. I play 6/7 instruments proficiently and am teaching myself another 5/6, and I know how to speak Hindi, English, and Gujarati, and am teaching myself basic Spanish. I am a big movie and TV watcher and love the outdoors along with teaching and performing as part of my hobbies.
My experience date back to my early college days, where I began as a volunteer piano teacher for veterans in a retirement community. I taught for a few months, when I was approached by two different women, one who wanted me to perform cover songs at the retirement facility that she managed, and another who wanted me to give her husband private music lessons. I performed for a few years during college, but stopped teaching after my only student moved away. It wasnt until a few years later, towards the end of my last years in college that I got back into teaching and put up ads to promote myself as a private instrutor. What I found is that people who enjoy one instrument, enjoy many instruments, and I wanted to help them learn music as a whole rather than a broken segment.
For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy. For adults, I really try to find out what it is they love to listen to and what it is they want to learn, and then I am basically a tool for their disposal for troubleshooting and motivation.
The best thing about teaching is when my students get frustrated at some concept or technique and I am able to show them a simple and easy solution to the problem. This usually lights up my student's faces and helps them get better not only at their instruments, but also at problem solving. I always try to reward those students who are able to answer music theory questions or those that complete their assignments. I am constantly teaching myself new music and find it imperative to teaching other students on the subject. I believe that you have to always be a student, in order to get the chance to become a great master.
