I have been studying music for 25+ years, and I still study music on a daily basis. I play piano, flute, guitar, ukulele, sing, dance, and act. I am very passionate about teaching music and finding the life lessons that music has to offer for each student. I am a very exacting and precise teacher who requires the best from my students, yet I am extremely kind, positive, encouraging, and understanding. I have a degree in music performance and education, as well as a psychology degree which enables me to properly motivate each student to their potential. I understand music and the theory of music and I am able to understand it on almost any instrument.
To me, the student's journey ALWAYS comes first, and I believe that is why I have been able to have been teaching for 20 years. Most of my students stay with me for up to 11 years as I teach them how to speak music fluently by studying several genres and perhaps multiple instruments. I am extremely passionate about each of my students, being very diligent to 'see' the individual for who they are, sculpt and carve a very unique custom path to success on their instrument. I've worked very hard to get myself to the place I want to be, which is working with students one on one in their own home on music, dancing, and acting. I can't wait to connect with you!
4 to 6 year olds - I ask that they know their alphabet, and I will take care of the rest. I feel it should be just a fun experience and practicing should not be forced, but encouraged. I implore prizes and techniques that make learning fun and a great first experience.
7 years and up - Music requires practice and I will teach the student how to practice, what to practice, and require that they practice. I keep track each week in a notebook of what their assignments are. I use many different books, learning by ear, learning by youtube, learning by rout, and I have developed my own music writing technique which decodes any song at any level to a much easier level because all students are unique, and deserve to have a teacher who can reach them. It is also very important to me that the student picks their own songs to learn as part of the curriculum, and I will help the student discover which style fits them the best.
I believe teaching is a privilege, and I strive to inspire each student and light the fire that is in all of us for expression. I am a master teacher, and will find specific motivational techniques to coarse greatness from each student. I will make sure each student is constantly moving forward and find a comfortable yet challenging pace for the student to ensure success. Any student who has done NYSSMA has done well, many of them with perfect scores at all levels. I love music and have a great passion for many things which comes through to each lesson. I believe this is the reason many of my students end up mastering their instrument before college, or continuing their education either studying multiple genres in depth, or studying several instruments.
