Teaching Certificate: Rutgers University
Hello! My name is Noelle V, and I am currently a senior Music Education major at Rutgers University. I will be graduating with my Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree, grades K - 12, in May of this year. I am currently full time student teaching at a high school which has exposed me to public school teaching, and which I plan to pursue after graduating! Up to now, my teaching experience includes private singing lessons, teaching at a summer camp, and teaching some group music/musical theatre classes. I have been performing in musicals and singing in choirs since middle school. I have also been trained classically during my time at Rutgers so, I love to teach any style of singing!
My teaching experience dates back to the summer after my Sophomore year of High School. I was a teaching assistant at a four week summer camp called The Summer Arts Workshop. I taught drama and music classes, students grades 5 - 12. In my classes are created group lessons, opportunities for student performance, and facilitated community building between the students. It was also up to me to teach the music for the musical. I worked at this camp up until 2020; when the camp was shut down because of Covid. Since then, I have been teaching private voice and beginner piano lessons! I absolutely love setting up a plan for my private students, talking to them about their goals and where they want to take their music learning! I find it important to have structure in the lessons, as well as explaining the importance of practice and preparation. In my private lessons, I give ample warm-up time taking the time to work on the technicalities of singing. Then I work on the rep that the student, or I, choose. And again, I am able to teaching musical theatre, pop, classical, and others! I have most experience with students ages 7 - 18, but am looking to bring on students of all ages!
I believe a lot in a "democratic classroom". This applies to public school teaching as well as private teaching. I always ask for the students input, opinions on rep, and am always asking them questions to get to know their personalities and other interests. With a beginner student, I would take the time to understand their long-term goals, why they're taking private lessons, and what they hope to get out of them. We would dive into a song that they like or want to learn, so that I can see their ability and learning speed. Once I get to know them and the lessons progress, I choose rep for them that I think fits their needs and interests.
The main reason that I keep track of my student's growth, musical ability, learning speed, and musical history, is because every student is uniquely different when they are in the lessons. Some students are better with being pushed at a quicker pace, and others need more time to learn things. I hope that through my lessons, my students are able to find a passion for music and take that passion with them through their lives. I like to get to know the student's personalities and what their other interests are to better tailor my instruction.
