National Endowment for the Arts award
Overview:
I'm a lifelong musician, and play flute professionally in both classical and jazz styles. Music is so much part of my life and I love sharing my passion and experience. Since I teach the Alexander Technique, I help my students be more comfortable while playing,
Ever since I started playing flute as a child, I've gravitated towards others who love music. It's been a wonderful journey so far. I play in a jazz trio and play classical flute and piano duos.
EXPERIENCE
I've been playing flute for many many decades. I keep it fresh by continuing to learn more about music. It's an endless well of possibilities. I currently play with a jazz quartet. I've played flute since i was 9 years old and currently favor the alto flute, with its rich, lower tone. I play and teach both C flute (regular flute) and the alto flute. In teaching, i emphasize music basics and also focus on comfort which leads to better tone and more ease. I use duets and whatever solos and methods are appropriate for each student. Sometimes students enjoy not using music on occasion and using their ears!
METHODS USED
Playing duets and tunes form the basis of lessons. You will learn scales and chords, rhythm, tone and being in tune. I like to include a bit of playing without reading music, depending on what your inclination is. For more advanced flutists, we will play Bach, Mozart, Telemann, Quantz (a flutist!) and whatever music you like and bring to the lesson. I sometimes use play alongs so we can play with piano or orchestra. I dont follow a lesson plan, but individualize the lesson for each student, allowing each student's strengths to lead the way.
LESSON STYLE
I think we all learn best when having fun, so I keep things light. For younger folks, I encourage practicing daily, but with a light touch. For older musicians, you decide how much you want to practice and progress. I emphasize comfort while playing and I have many tools and ideas to help with that. Regular lessons help so much with motivation.
If you are interested in jazz improvisation, I have a some tested ideas that work. I was strictly classical for the first 20 years, then dabbled in jazz for another 10, then found the best way for me to transition. My methods to transition to jazz seem to work for other folks too. Using the tools you've got, you can learn to read chord changes, use the scales you already know and start to play tunes you love.
