Longy School of Music Masters in music education Graduate May 2020
Music Scholarship of 8,000.00 for 4 years University Of Redlands
I received my Bachelors of Music in violin performance from the University of Redlands. I will be starting school in July to receive my Masters in music education from Longy School of music. I have always wanted to teach and it is important for my students to enjoy the love of music. I feel it is important to perform as well so they understand that I still need to work hard to stay a strong musician. If I am requiring my student to perform I need to set that example for them. Most importantly I want them to enjoy music and have fun while learning their instrument.
I have taught in the classroom and privately for over 10 years. When students start on their instrument I encourage the parents to be part of the lesson so they can help and encourage practicing at home. When the students are at a beginning stage I have them practice about 20-30 minutes a day. At the beginning the student is getting adjusted to the instrument and I don't want to push them too much. Once they get to a intermediate or advanced level they should be practicing 45 minutes or more to continue progress to be able to compete in competitions and be able to audition for youth orchestras.
When my students first start I start them on the Suzuki method until they get to book 4. While they are learning from that certain method I do encourage students to tell me what songs they enjoy listening to and we will choose easy versions of the song that keeps them motivated and excited. Once my students pass book 4 of Suzuki we start getting advanced music including scale books, etudes, and concertos. I also include music theory. It is important the students are not just becoming strong musicians but they need to be able to read music and understand what rhythm is.
Teaching is my passion. I started playing the violin at the age of 6 years old. Music gave me confidence in school and in my life. When I was in elementary school I found out that reading comprehension was difficult for me and so I had to get tutoring. I was very strong in music and that boosted my confidence in school. I have a lot of patience because of this but I also have high standards because I know what my students are capable of doing. I want my students to build confidence in their playing and at the same time have fun while doing it.
