Bachelor's of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies- Specialization in Music Bilingual and ESL Certified Social Music Diploma from American College of Musicians
Overview:
I am now a Texas Retired Elementary School Teacher. I taught elementary for 27 years. During this time I have taught piano part time at a music store studio and currently at my own home studio. I received my Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and Specialization in Music from UTSA(San Antonio) . It brings me a lot of joy to share my love of music with my piano students. I get at lot of satisfaction when I see my piano students' happy faces when they start playing their first piano pieces.
EXPERIENCE
My thirty years piano teaching experience began in Eagle Pass , Texas when my own piano teacher encouraged me to begin teaching my own students. I actually began my teaching experience by helping out my piano teacher's students' with their piano practice. By that time I had performed in piano recitals , played in the National Guild of Piano Teacher Auditions, and attended piano workshops with my piano teacher.
My parents' and my piano teacher's encouragement was what gave me the confidence and motivation to pursue my education in music studies. I moved to San Antonio to attend UTSA to pursue a teaching degree . During my studies at UTSA I was fortunate to get hired as a part time piano teacher at a Music Store. When I graduated from UTSA with my degree in IDS and a Specialization in Music I took a job as a 3rd grade elementary school teacher, but continued to teach piano part time. After 27 years in Public Education , I have retired and now doing full-time what I love to do best. Teach Piano!
METHODS USED
My Teaching Philosophy centers on helping students develop a comprehensive understanding of music that will enable them to enjoy playing the piano . It is my desire that my students become lifelong independent music learners. Piano Methods I have used: Alfred's, Bastien, Piano Adventures For adults a favorite is Adult Piano Adventures. I like that it includes lessons, technic exercises and theory all in one book. I also use the Hanon book for warm-up exercises. All students are different so regardless of the method that is used with the students the important thing is for students to have fun while they are learning .
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is one in which students will feel comfortable, relaxed, and self motivated. I am patient, encouraging, and flexible with my students. They will set short and long range music goals and will have fun practicing their lessons and working to reach their goals. All students are different and will learn at a different pace. I praise my students for their accomplishments and hard work. It is very important to me that my students leave their piano sessions feeling happy and looking forward to their next piano lesson session.
