Bachelor of Music in Education- Stephen F. Austin State University. 2014-2018
I am a motivated teacher and performer. I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Education in 2018 from Stephen F Austin State University. I am currently attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where I am working on my Master of Music in Trumpet Performance. I rehearse with top ensembles there daily, and perform regularly with them. I also play various gigs in the D/Fw area, as well as all around east Texas. I am driven to become the best trumpet player I can be, and I push my students to reach that same goal.
I started teaching lessons in college. I began teaching lessons 6 years ago, and have always taught in-home lessons. I believe that teaching in the home will help my students be more comfortable practicing at home. I prefer the one on one setting that teaching lessons gives you over the large ensemble setting. I believe it gives more opportunity to grow as a player. I work with students of all ages, because I believe everyone that has a drive to get better deserves the opportunity to study with someone who will push them in that direction.
For players just starting out, I always start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book. It is a good place to learn the notes, as well as how to read music on necessary. As a trumpet player, I am a firm believer in the Arban Complete Comservatory Method, and Clarke Technical Studies. These are the backbone of my fundamentals. I add these two books in as soon as I believe the student is ready. I also incorporate flexibility studies from Bai Lin and Irons. I believe Bai Lin's book offers an easier start than Iron's. I also use appropriate etudes and solos in lessons to help students see that their hard work pays off.
I am passionate about music, and hope that my students will develop a passion for it as well. I believe in setting short term and long term goals, and developing a plan to attain both. I teach all my students multiple styles, because it is important for trumpet players to know how to play every style. I am quick to acknowledge when a student has gotten better. Positive feedback is very important in keeping students motivated. I try to push my students as hard as I push myself daily, but I am sensitive to students needs. My main goal is that every student develops skills to be successful, and finds a love for music that they might not have known they had.
