I am a lover for music who is passionate about teaching and spreading knowledge about music. In 2012, I enrolled to Benedict College where I majored in music and became a section leader my second semester of the concert choir. Throughout my college career I was always open to tutoring those who struggled with music or just simply wanted to learn more about it. I've performed for many different events on and off the college campus. I have had the opportunity to sing for the President of the institution and all of the donors.
I have been teaching since 2013. I was working under my piano instructor, who had her own practice where children would come to the school for piano lessons. When I graduated in 2016, I started giving vocal lessons on weekends at students homes. The following year, I started giving elementary piano lesson. I always want my students to feel comfortable and happy when learning. I try not to give too much because it can become very overwhelming. I recommend in the beginning that they practice everyday for about 30 minutes and each week they are recommended to add an additional 10 minutes.
Students who are young beginners, I like to start with Hal Leonard's My First Piano. It's written for ages 5 and 6 full of excitement and imagination. Once the student has completed the C level of this book, or if I feel as though they are ready for the next level sooner than expected, we will move on to solo repertoire. Even tho this text is written for young children, I still like to utilize some of the rhythm games for my older students as well.
As far a voice lessons goes, in the beginning there will be many warm-ups before we move on to repertoire. As an instructor, I want to know what type of voice I am working with. It is very important to exercise your vocal chords and train them to be able sing properly. Also, we will be working a lot on posture; how to stand when singing, showing confidence and more!
If a student has never been introduced to music, I try to take them on a creative journey. I often want to find out what is their favorite kind of music. It is all about making the student comfortable and eager. It's important to always commend the student when there's progression. I always encourage my students to learn about many different types of music; to broaden their musical ear and notice how many type of music can come together and create something epic. Many of today's music are samples from other styles.
