I am an experienced musician and teacher of 50 years. My life is has been about playing, performing, and writing music. I have many original recordings and have performed my music quite often throughout the years. I have many years of experience in one on one sessions as well as concert openers. I have the ability to teach from the beginning up to helping fine tune your skills. My desire is bring others into the passion of music and playing their instrument. I am a very easy going teacher who wants to teach and provide support in a non-stressful environment.
The experience I had started with was a community center in an underprivileged area of Kansas city in 1973 as a Senior in High School and extended to many retail establishments of the Kansas city metro and beyond. I have also taught private lessons in my residence and in homes of many students during the pandemic. For nearly 20 years I have taught all ages at the Kansas city strings in Merriam Kansas as independently contracted teacher. I have learned over the years my teaching style has been very comforting to students as I am a positive calm teacher who wants to foster the love of music.
When I am working with students with no experience or beginners I like to focus on the enjoyment and less explanation of technical matters. I like to work with students on learning to play a tune first so they feel more accomplished and dont lose the excitement due to the repetitive nature of learning a new skill. When I am working with students that are more advanced, I would do more listening and focus on technical skills. I like to come from a place of positive reinforcement to help nurture the excitement and enjoyment of music.
I really enjoy providing students with positive feedback and reinforcement to cultivate a nurturing environment to foster musical growth in a positive way. I like to listen to what the student is giving to the music, teach them positively what should be reinforced, and what should be understood in a technical aspects of playing to understand why certain things work and why other things do not. I think its important to figure out how the student learns best and tailor my teaching style to the individual.
