My name is Patricia Anselmo and my goal as a flute instructor is to encourage students in their individual growth in their music development. I graduated with both my BM & MM degrees in Classical Flute Performance at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. I have studied with Kaoru Hinata, Keith Underwood, and Bart Feller as my primary flute instructors. I have had the opportunity to perform at various orchestral, chamber, and opera festivals in the United States and abroad. Before I began my Masters in Music, I had the opportunity to perform as the Soloist with the Central Jersey Orchestra to perform the Mozart Concerto in G Major in May 2017. Recently, a few weeks ago I recorded a variety of pieces for my first debut album in Brooklyn called "Music Heals the Heart." I am working on publishing it sometime later this summer or hopefully sooner.
I began teaching during the last few years of my bachelor's degree, I remember taking a Flute Pedagogy class which provided me the basics as to how to demonstrate concepts to students. I have taught in students' homes and at various music studios in New Brunswick by using the Rubank Method, etude books, and flute repertoire. During the last few years of the pandemic right in March 2020 after I finished my Master's Degree, I began taking courses with the Suzuki Method instruction for flute instruction. The Suzuki Method encourages students to learn at their own pace in a positive and non-judgmental environment.
In each flute lesson, I typically begin with a bow as respect for myself and the student. We typically start with tonalization warmup from Suzuki Book 1. The student listens and produces the best sound they can make after listening to me. My goal as a teacher is to help them become their own teacher and evaluate the things they can improve upon. Additionally, each piece in the Suzuki Books, the piece has something to review and teaches a new concept which I really like as well. I demonstrate concepts in a variety of ways by indirectly teaching them the concept of producing a tone or articulation and or rhythm. I teach the concepts with the use of dice games, playing a phrase in different parts of the room, and other activities to help them learn a concept.
It has been truly rewarding to see students' growth when they smile after finishing learning a song! Recently I did a practice flute challenge for my students, they were rewarded with a gift card if they completed the number of minutes they needed for 4 weeks. Having a goal in mind for them, pushed them to practice different things with a focused mindset. With each concert I held virtually, it was amazing to see how much music they have learned and how far they have come in their musicianship. The support system that my students had from their families was an amazing feeling. I enjoy holding virtual flute recitals to show off all the hard work they do in the lesson and outside the lessons.
Patricia worked with my son who had not played flute before. She was incredibly patient and made every attempt to make sure he was learning technique while also having fun. Would definitely recommend.
Patti is a gifted musician and a wonderful positive teacher. She supports my learning with a variety of ideas and strategies. She always has a smile and words of encouragement. I love hearing and watching her play the flute as she demonstrates a specific breathing technique or a way to get a better sound!! I enjoy and look forward to my weekly lessons. Patti is an amazing teacher.
She's literally a magician. I've been getting lessons from her for years now and she has helped me achieve musical goals that I never dreamed of prior to. She helped my confidence as a player and as a person and I always look forward to my lessons with her because I know I'll walk away a much better player than when I showed up, even after a 45 minute lesson. She's great and I would never want another flute and piccolo teacher besides her.
Patti has been a wonderful flute and piccolo teacher for my daughter. Patti has taught her technical skills in a caring and encouraging manner, all while sharing her deep musical knowledge and love for the instruments. I highly recommend Patti.
Truly excellent instructor! My daughter loves her lessons with Miss Patti and has made great progress with her flute playing after she started her lessons with Patti.
