Course Work: California Jazz Conservatory , Course Work: Manhattan School of Music, Course Work: Diablo Valley College
I learned my fundamentals as a musician from my musician mother who is a vocalist and childhood piano teachers she set me up with from ages 4-12. At the age of 12, I picked up the trombone in the school instrumental program. I continued to play in school bands throughout my education and in high school, I was set up with a private trombone instructor. Throughout high school and college I’ve studied with professional trombonists: Don Kennelly - SF Opera Bass Trombone, Dave Martell, David Taylor - New York, and Doug Beavers and John Gove. I’ve since performed professionally in churches, jazz concerts in small, large and festival venues, marching competitions, salsa clubs, musical theater and orchestral settings. As a seasoned veteran in the field of music, I hope to impart the knowledge and wisdom of the art of trombone playing, as well as the understanding of the musical language to the next generation.
I began teaching private lessons while I was still in college around 2005 and have had few private students. I’ve taught and coached jazz band, concert band, and orchestra youth programs like Stanford Jazz, The Jazzschool, and Golden State Youth Orchestra. The students I work with learn the fundamentals and mechanics of the instrument, the understanding of musical language and theory, how it relates to the world, expression of feelings, thoughts and ideas, and the overall joy and fulfillment of playing music on trombone. I’ve taught beginner piano lessons and can help beginners understand the keyboard and perform simple pieces, improvise using simple chord voicings and voice-leading, and utilizing the keyboard for composition and arranging.
Trombone - I utilize the books Abram’s and Rochut-Melodious Etudes. I develop custom curriculum for each student’s level and learning style. At the first lesson, I evaluate what the student wants to get out of the lessons, what sparks their interests in music, and skill level. From there, I share exercises from the books, exercises I create for developing certain skills, and later on, creation or exercises by the student. The skills to improve on are endless for every musician, so the goal is to break down which skills are needed to build the foundation and work from there. Beginning Piano - I will utilize Faber methods or Piano Adventures.
My teaching style is flexible. One of my teachers asked me up front how hard I wanted him to be on me and that’s something we would go over as well. It’s important I learn the personality and learning style of the student. It’s important to establish a trust and understanding so as not to take criticisms personally so that we can develop weaknesses and build on strengths. Every musician has different strengths and weaknesses my goal is to help them achieve their best musical self to grow their confidence and be as fully realized as possible. I also take into account the type of music the student is interested in and try to hear the focus of the music lessons in the direction the student wants to go.
