I'm a professional musician who is committed to keeping the art of music alive through the education of new musicians. I graduated from Berklee College of Music as Summa Cum Laude in 2015, getting my Bachelor's of Music after completing a four year performance major track for guitar. While there I was fortunate enough to perform in one of the first Heavy Metal Operas entitled Queen Boudicca: A Metal Opera. I have been performing with metal bands, rock bands, swing big bands, and top 40's cover or tribute bands for the past nine years. I've had the opportunity to study with Joe Stump, one of the most virtuostic metal guitar players in the industry, for the last four years. I've played in many different syles and settings and this has helped me form a proper understanding of stuidio spaces that are appropriate for learning as well as a proper understanding of how to work within a band setting ranging from a trio to a cast of 50+ musicians.
My teaching expereince started in my senior year of High School teaching three seperate students beginning level guitar playing. I maintained these three students for the entire year before I left to attend college. One of the most rewarding experiences is seeing a technique or a song finally click with a student and watching their eyes light up with excitement and wonder towards the new doors they have just opened through hard work and dedication. While in college I experienced teaching from a different point of view as I assisted with tutoring fellow students in subjects like Ear Training, Theory, and Arranging. I find that the understanding of these music fundamentals creates a comfortable place like a home for a young musician to live in, and when they explore new and exciting sounds they leave the comfort of their "homes" and find things that end of defining their own sound and style.
My methods to teach beginning guitar are basic music reading techniques as they relate to the instrument. Teaching the fundamentals of music gives the student the ability to work on technique development. Once the fundamentals of technique and theory line up then I will begin to introduce songs and solos based on the students ability and interests. The purpose of working on songs and solos that the student wants to learn is to keep the student interested and practicing every day. For adults, and more advanced students I will dive straight into high ability techniques and musical theory understanding so the student isn't bored and is always being pushed to improve their abilities and knowledge.
The most important part in my teaching style is my ability to cater the lessons to each individual student. Not every student is on the same level or interested in the same things. It's important to keep the student interested and help them truly uncover their passion for music by letting them lead me to the appropriate places they want to go. Once I know where it is each student wants to take their music then I can teach them the skills they need to become really incredible musicians.
