Master's Thesis- Building an Orchestra program in an Urban High School Setting
I have been teaching music in public schools for 7 years, and private lessons for 11. I currently teach high school choir and piano at Scranton High School during the week, and have taught all ages for strings for numerous years as well. My main instrument in undergrad was violin, with a minor in piano, and I have had extensive training and teaching experience on voice, viola, cello, and bass. I have both bachelor's and master's degrees in music education, as well as a master's in curriculum.
I have been teaching privately for 11 years, and in public school for the last 7. I have played the violin for 20 years, and viola/cello/bass for the past 10. I have also played piano and sung for the last 12 years, and have performed in both solo and group settings on every instrument mentioned. I have sent off numerous students to major in music over the years, and have had many opportunities to play in professional orchestras, and taught at Settlement Music School for 3 year in Philadelphia.
Beginner Violin/Viola/Cello/Double Bass- I typically start in a class method book like essential elements or something similar, and move out of that book into etude books with music that pairs well with them, before moving onto things that are more student chosen once they can play well enough to play things that they like. Beginner Piano- I use the Leila Fletcher books because they are set up at a good pace, and work through those, adding in music that a student wants to learn as we go. Voice- I let students decide where we are starting with songs they want to sing, and work with them on their vocal technique and music skills as we go to help train their voice to perform the music they like best.
Every student moves at a different pace, so I move as fast as they are looking to move. My biggest goal for a student is for the experience to be good, and to be fun. We can move forward in what we are learning while still having fun and doing music that a student would like to do, and cover everything that we need to cover in order to be better at out instrument. This is also how I teach my classes in school during the day, it creates a better relationship with the teacher, and allows for a student to buy more into what they are doing because they have more control over everything.
