i have been teaching for 55 yrs. i was a theory comp major at northern kentucky university . i was a house writer for edge of the lake publishing in nashiville tenn. i am an inductee in the st augustine musician's hall of fame . i am a professional studio and road musician . i am a memeber of bmi ascap sesac. i teach all stringed instruments including piano and drums. i have worked with or fronted major acts with my own blues rock band 'the alligator cowboys' see you tube vids. such as foghat foreigner clarence carter james brown bob dylan confederater railroad david allen coe jaco pastorious doc severensin jr walker and many others. i love teaching as much as i love performing . my mantra for my students is . nothing is hard, it is only new.
i have been teaching for 55 yrs both privately and in teaching studios as well as in group settings . i have volunteered teaching classes at the ymca , the boys and girls clubs . continuing education at northern kentucky university . i have taught musicians on stage as we perform . i love to teach as well as i love to play live. i also teach music theory and composition. i teach all stringed instruments including piano and drums . i teach all instruments . even those that i do not actually play . sax flute trumpet etc. if you can play one instrument you can play them all once you know where the notes are . right ? lol .
i teach each student individually that is to say that i tailor the lessons to meet the level and desires of the student . i include teaching theory as i go along with each student. i tell each student that there is no such thing as a mistaked, there is only learning. i usually teach two songs in the first hour lesson . one in four four time and one in three four time . i also teach how to transpose any song that the student wishes to learn into the key that the student is able to sing the song in. again . nothing is hard . it is only new.
first i ask what the student desires to learn . what type of music etc. once i have taught a few songs i ask the student to write a list of songs that they would like to learn. i teach how to find the key that the student sings in and how to transpose the song into that key. if the student does not wish to sing i teach them how the instrument of their choice works . again regardless of the instrument i usually am able to teach a student two songs in an hour lesson . one in four four timing and one in three four timing . there is nothing better than to see the light come on in a students face and see the confidence of ' i can do this !
