2006 - Performed solo piano in Russia
I'm looking for motivated students who want to quickly and efficiently improve their piano. I've taken lessons privately, at college (William and Mary in Virginia), and a great interest in empowering people. I have an analytical mind so hopefully that helps break down a complex problem into something very approachable. Let's meet, set our goals and I can be as independent as you need. I have played piano for 25 years and performed for singers, soloists, and in solo concerts as well. I'm also an amateur composer if that's an interest of yours.
I have taught mostly for friends in the past. I started playing in early age, but didn't start teaching until some high school friends wanted to learn a few things. I really enjoyed helping them break down a problem, I always had a very systems-approach. Recently, I had a female student that was learning pieces for her school's talent show. I helped her understand the underlying technique issues and revisited some basics concerning rhythm and fingering, and she gave me a very positive review for my style. Another student was learning a piece to play for his girlfriend, so I'm happy with short-term projects too. It's all about your goals.
For the total beginner, I take pen and paper and teach music theory and reading music. I'll give homework so the student can progress rapidly. For beginning students, I would start with a teaching method of olden days, which is all free and printable online, giving the student a background directly from the masters as they move forward. For intermediate students, I would find out exactly what style you like to play and find appropriate pieces at the right level. As challenges are met, you will feel yourself gaining momentum and eventually you won't need me! :)
My teaching style is very calm explanations of complex subjects so you can get to making the music you want to. Since I'm not hiding behind some teaching method, you will very rapidly discover that this isn't rocket science, it's a series of conventions and technique. I wouldn't stand there making you run scales, I'd respect the direct you want to go with your music, and tackle the "prerequisite" issues. I approach teaching by letting myself get out of your way, I can give homework, check in informally, and be available and I hope approachable for all "stupid questions."
