I have been in Who's Who for Teaching Band 3 Times
I have has 6 All State Drummers
I am a very passionate annd motivated instructor who enjoys working with student's and sharing my experiences and love of music. I 1987 I graduated from McLennan Community College with an Associates Degree in Music Performance. In 1994 I graduated from the University Of Texas In Arlington with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education. I also have a Texas Teaching Certificate. I taught Band in Sinton ISD for 29 years and retired this past summer. I have over 38 years of experience playing Drum Set all around Texas.
My teaching experience dates back to my College days. I began teaching private tutoring to different schools in the Metroplex area. Also I have continued to teach private lessons at schools in the Corpus are while I was a Band Director in Sinton for 29 years. During my years as a Band Director I have had several All State Drummers. They were not only from the school I taught at but also from teaching private lessons at other schools. My main thing is to make lessons a fun learning exoerience with the feeling of success.
For beginning students typically start with Drum Set For Kids by Hal Leonard. In this book after playing lessons each one has a song to play along to with a recording. This makes learning this book fun for studemts. I also like to focus on hand technique and all of the basics for playing Drums. I do include teaching drum rudiments for they are very important to have. For a Drummer they are our dictionary that help puts phrases together. I also use Drum Books 1 by Hal Leonard. In this book I will teach reading rhythms as well as different kind of Drum Set patterns as well as the drum staff and notation for drum set. For drum set fill ideas I use 101 breaks by Assai Krause. These are all very fun books.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students develop a passion for learning Drum Set. It is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I acknowledge accomplishments that helps fuel a students desire to progress. Also I want them to be eager to learn. In my teaching experiences I like to teach basics but also make it fun for the students. If they wish to learn a song that they like I will do this during the end course of my lesson. I like to know what style the student likes to play and concentrate on that for them. This way I can tailor my instruction ti their wants and needs
