I am a passionate and professional music teacher who has been teaching music for over a decade. I learned guitar at the age of fifteen and never stopped learning! I was in both the Marching Band and high school varsity band during the mid 2000s and after that I recorded an acoustic album which features both my guitar playing and singing. I believe music itself is both an expression and a feeling and having the ability to teach this skill set to others is a pleasure to me. I think music can bring peace of mind to the player and the listener. I would love to share the gift of music with you and continue this journey together!
I began teaching private lessons during college but I have always shown people how to play instruments my entire career. I have always had a knack for both learning music and teaching it. One thing my students would say about me is that I am patient. Everyone learns in a different way and there is not one way to teach someone to play a song or read a sheet. Initially I learned by ear but my journey has lead me to advance my playing through non traditional routes such as learning from others along the way, reading sheet music and watching lessons online. That is why I offer online lessons; I have learned from videos and covers of songs and no one learns exactly the same as someone else. Being patient with yourself is an important part of learning how to become a great musician.
I typically start teaching students with very basic chords and very simple songs. I usually feel satisfied if the student is able to pick up on a simple song by the end of the first lesson and learning songs is the best way to learn guitar in my opinion. I usually will work with the student on what music they like and what they want to learn then we can sit and learn it together. For younger students I will typically pick out a few songs and demonstrate them and then work with the student on figuring out how to play at least one of them. By the end of the lesson typically the student has the song almost mastered and I am able to understand more about their learning style.
I have a very patient teaching style. I think have a calm cool manner has benefitted my students in the past because feeling pressure can be hard and make the lesson not as fun. To me, learning a new instrument should be soothing and fun and it should be rewarding also. I also communicate with my students to see what I can do to help them learn and recommend different techniques that help me learn. I also teach with innovative styles such as the incorporation of online learning and sharing videos that may help the student learn even more in their spare time.
