Overview:
I have recently finished the fourth and final year of my doctorate degree in voice at the University of Oklahoma and am currently working on my dissertation. At OU, I studied with former Metropolitan opera baritone Kim Josephson. I was a good singer when I arrived at OU, but Kim, who has taken lessons from the opera legend Corelli himself, has transformed how I sing. Since I was a child, performance has been my passion, but I share the same love for teaching. Don’t be deterred by the thought of classical training techniques. The techniques and abilities I have developed did not hinder my ability to sing and perform other genres as one might assume. In fact, the opposite is true. The classical technique I teach helps the singer develop full control of his or her voice. This allows one to adjust one’s singing style appropriately to the genre at hand. Stable breath support, resonance, and relaxation: these are required to perform classical genres, but are not necessarily a must when performing modern microphone music, BUT... when a singer has these abilities at his or her disposal, that person can easily sing above and beyond the average singer.
EXPERIENCE
I currently teach voice and theory at Norman Music Institute in Norman, OK. I have been teaching there since March of 2019. I also have been teaching students off and on over the past 7 years. Having been a college student needing to move between states every few years has made it difficult to keep things consistent, but I have certainly seen success in my students in the time I have had with them. My teaching style focuses on a combination of vocal excercises and repertoire designed to enforce the techniques that I am teaching you. I also will have you bring in any repertoire you would like to sing. Understand that I am here to teach you how to sing the repertoire you want to perform, and I won’t try to make you a classical singer unless you want to be one.????
METHODS USED
For children, I focus on the comprehension of pitch and note reading. If the child has a song that he or she wants to sing, then we will pursue it if it is vocally fitting. If not, I have a variety we can choose from. We also will pursue the fundamentals of music theory in our lessons as well. Teenagers to adults can also pursue the fundamentals of music theory or beyond depending on their current knowledge. Lesson repertoire will be based primarily on the style that the student is wanting to pursue, and all students will practice some classical repertoire for the sake of technique development. I also will introduce any students to vocal exercises that strengthen the diaphragm, increase range, and improve relaxation.
LESSON STYLE
I understand that many people take voice lessons recreationally, and that not everyone trains like a college student. I do, however, encourage all my students not to sell themselves short and set high standards for themselves. I acknowledge any and all progress that is made, and encourage my students to be proud of the sound they are making. If you don’t like your voice, then you certainly won’t sing for someone else. I also have my students record all of their lessons so that they can go back and listen to anything that they forgot as they practice throughout the week. I have every lesson and coaching recorded for the last 5 years, and I still go back and listen to them on occasion!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
