Overview:
I grew up and went to high school on Long Island , New York. I always loved the guitar and began playing in rock and metal bands while I was in high school, playing shows and competing in battle of the bands in New York City, as well as competing in guitarmageddon competitions. Once I began studying classical guitar with Michael Belajonas in college I quickly fell in love with acoustic finger style and flamenco guitar. After receiving my Associates degree in music from Suffolk County Community College I studied at the University of Nevada
Las Vegas. I majored in music composition and had a desire to write film music and compose new guitar pieces. I really enjoy teaching , especially children, and watching students grow in confidence and ability. I take my role as an educator seriously and I continue to push myself to grow as a teacher adapt new ideas and technology into my lessons and continuously try to expand my own skills and knowledge.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private guitar and piano lessons since 2011 . I currently teach piano, to kids from kindergarten to fifth grade, in a group setting as part of an after school program as well as private piano or keyboard lessons. I taught guitar and music theory classes at the Nevada Art Academy in Las Vegas since 2012. My past students have performed at UNLV , competed in the music teachers national association events such as theory and repertoire exams and silver state competitions. I plan to start a youth guitar ensemble in the near future.
METHODS USED
For Guitar I feel that it is best for everyone to start out learning classical and then branch out to other styles. However, I , as a teacher want to teach everything if I can , while at the same time really focusing on what the students goals are in learning to play and what music gets them excited about playing. So I will use standard guitar teaching materials such as studies from Sor and Giuliani , or Segovia scales , or certain method books by Hal Leonard , Scott Tennant etc...but each student is different and my approach is focused on tailoring everything to each student specifically. Some learn note reading and theory fast but have trouble with left hand fingering or right hand technique so we would focus more on the physical techniques while others may play very well already but understand little or nothing about theory.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is diverse, I like to pull ideas from all kinds of sources so that I can relate things easier and hopefully make learning more fun. I also stress the importance of being disciplined and focusing on goals whether practicing or performing. My style of teaching depends on the student and his or her goals . My aim however is to teach them not to just play songs but also to fully understand their instrument and thus be able to write their own music , improvise and play with other musicians. I strive to give my students expert knowledge of music theory and technique and expose them to all kinds of musical styles. I encourage them to develop their listening skills as a musician and to understand music history and the culture and people who have helped improve the arts.
