I am currently a high school choir director in Lubbock, Texas. I recently returned from teaching music internationally. I previously taught music in Santa Fe as well as Albuquerque in the public schools and at School of Rock. I graduated from ENMU in 2016 with a degree in choral music education. I was a member of a few of the NMMEA All-State Choirs throughout high school. I have performed in choirs at Carnegie Hall twice. Even though I decided to pursue music education, I continue to perform. I performed in operas and musical theater productions throughout my college career.
I began teaching lessons through ENMU when I took a vocal pedagogy class. It was one of my favorite experiences! I knew my students were excited about what they were learning and they improved so much. I love that I'm able to help people in that way. My experience is mainly with teaching classical music for voice. However, I have a strong interest in many types of music and am comfortable teaching a variety of music styles. I've been playing guitar since I was in elementary school, and I am excited about being able to teach guitar. I taught myself how to play guitar. I don't teach classical guitar. My experience is with playing multiple genres, from rock to pop. I mostly play acoustic music, but I am open to teaching students who prefer to use an electric guitar. I began learning piano in college and can teach beginning piano.
For voice- I will teach a technique-based lesson. The student and I will create goals together. I will select repertoire that is appropriate to help them reach their goals. I will teach them proper technique for posture, breathing, and healthy singing. For guitar- I will teach them chords, how to read tablature, and together we will pick the repertoire. The goal here is that they can take away the ability to learn new songs independently. For piano- I will teach theory, proper placement, chords, and how to read music. I will select proper repertoire in order for them to progress in their abilities.
I believe that the most important thing a music teacher can do is promote a lifelong love of music. My approach in a lesson is to create a positive learning environment where the student feels encouraged and excited. Integrity is of utmost importance. Having correct rhythms and pitch is vital, but artistry and musicianship are equally as important. It is my purpose to help these students become musicians, not just people who practice music. A goal of mine is that my students will grow to become more kind, positive, influential, and expressive.
