Overview:
I am a professional trombonist that is passionate about music and education. I am finishing my DMA in Jazz Performance at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and love to teach, perform, and spend time with my wife and child.
I was born in San Antonio, TX and moved to Washington state from early middle school through my the end of my bachelor's degree, receiving much training and experience as a classical and jazz trombonist. After that, I was invited to pursue my master's in Jazz Studies in Michigan, which led to my current residence in Illinois, where I'm finishing a doctorate in Jazz Performance. It's been quite a journey so far and I'm happy to share my wisdom, knowledge, and experience with others, especially with students!
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to 2006, my second semester in college. I taught a few students at a middle school in the area for a year and a half. Teaching students about the importance of passion, fundamentals, hard work, and creativity are a staple in my teaching style. After taking some time off of school, I began to teach again during the second year of my masters degree at Michigan State University in 2015. I have been teaching students in brass, jazz, music and jazz theory, jazz history, jazz arranging, and composition since then. Most recently I was adjunct instructor of jazz arranging and trombone at Lincoln College . I enjoy teaching anyone who wants to learn!
METHODS USED
I begin with a warm-up routine, which is crucial for any professional musician, especially a brass player. It is comparable to the necessity of a professional athletes warm-up routine. Next, we cover etudes, which allow the students to combine their technical and musical capabilities and gives the student a short-term goal. After playing through the etude, I tell the student what I liked about their playing and give some suggestions for improvement. The end last part of our lesson cover standard repertoire of music, which is a long-term project. Here, the student applies and demonstrates all aspects of playing the trombone, both technically and musically. For a jazz student, I would extend etudes by adding melodic devices (licks) in all twelve keys and and replace repertoire with learning tunes (American songbook and jazz standards).
LESSON STYLE
It is so rewarding seeing a student develop a passion for music! Intrinsic motivation is what my approach to teaching is founded on. My goal as a music educator is to give my students the tools to become truly independent so that they continue to grow and share their knowledge and passion with others. My style of teaching keeps in mind that each student is different, so a different approach is required for each student. Part of this process is finding out what inspires the student, which allows me to tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
