I am a Classical linguist turned Vocal Performer and choral conductor who believes that active participation in music improves quality of life for all ages. This belief comes from a life-time of musical learning and performance spanning violin lessons at the age of 4 all the way to singing on stage with the Cleveland Orchestra, Akron Symphony, Canton Symphony, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras to name a few, as well as a paid vocalist with many fine choral ensembles in the NE Ohio area, including the Summit Choral Society Masterworks Chorale, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, Akron Symphony Chorus, and the Cleveland Singers' Club of the Western Reserve Chorale. My teaching style blends a dynamic synergy of theoretical and technical foundation while emphasizing artistry, musicality, and drawing out students' passions from the start. It is my greatest joy to spread the gift of music and a deeper understanding of our art to as many as I can.
My music teaching experience begins with brass, both teaching private trumpet lessons, and assisting with various youth ensembles including the MusicAlliance Honor Band and several high school marching band ensembles. While I continue those engagements, my primary passion lies in directing choir, both youth and adult, as well teaching private voice lessons as I myself continue to study both areas. I have experience teaching classical, choral, jazz, music theatre, and popular styles of singing and can adapt the fundamentals of healthful vocal production to any genre. But I treat private music instruction as I do any other of my musical endeavors: as an opportunity for continuing my life-long learning.
All good singing is the same. Whether you are belting out Celine Dion or delicately exploring the passion and beauty of a Schubert Art Song, 99% of the technique remains the same--the fundaments of breath support, posture, vowel shape, formants, laryngeal posture, etc. As an instructor I reinforce those fundamentals very hard from the beginning because establishing a solid technical base is paramount to healthful singing in any style. Within that technical framework, I always make sure that I am finding my students' passions and working to make their own musicianship and musicality come to life as effectively and rewardingly as possible.
Unique among any musical instrument, the voice is an indelible part of the human body and human experience, and as such there is no deeper or more fulfilling reward than using the voice to give the gift of music, passion, and artistic expression. But like playing any other musical instrument, vocalism requires constant practice, discipline and care to cultivate into an effective and healthful talent. By blending foundational techniques and triggering my students' unique musical passions, I strive to offer a learning experience that is as efficacious as it is enjoyable.
