I received a Bachelor’s of Music degree in Voice and Music Theater from the University of Texas at Arlington, where I appeared in several productions such has Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (Gianni Schicchi); Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma (Judd Fry) and South Pacific (Emile de Beque) and as Tevey in Fiddler on the Roof by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Professional credits include the Fort Worth Opera; Cincinnati Opera and Shreveport Opera Company and many local area concerts.
I have been singing and teaching for over 30 years both professionally and for my own enjoyment. Singing is my passion , it is what I do. I have found that teaching someone to enjoy and express themselves through music is perhaps one of the most rewarding things I do. For the past several years I have had the privilege to teach within several school districts as a Private Voice Instructor. These districts include Arlington ISD, Grapevine ISD, Plano ISD and Lewisville ISD. During my time with Grapevine ISD I worked closely with Music Faculty in support of their program which included writing curriculum for the Music History program. I work closely with my students and their Choral Director to make the musical experience fun and rewarding. At the end of the school year the students perform in recital for their parents and friends. I am always very proud of my students as they demonstrate what they have learned and how much they have improved through the year.
I take a physiological approach to singing...after all it is a physical endeavor. The voice or larynx, despite all it complexities, is just another set of muscles that can be trained to reach its fullest potential. The method I teach, “The Franco/Italian Bel Canto Method” has been taught in Europe for more than 200 years and has produced the world’s greatest classical singers. Now, having said that let me assure you that studying this method doesn’t mean you have to become a classical singer. The techniques used are designed to strengthen and improve the quality of the human voice and can be applied to any genre whether your goal is “Broadway,” “American Idol” or you simply want to improve your voice for your own personal satisfaction. The method also addresses all things associated with singing, such as breathing, posture and stage presence.
Music lessons will certainly broaden the students knowledge of music. It has been proven through scientific study that the study of music will improve the individuals cognitive ability and aids in brain development. Children who study music develop higher math and problem solving skills. Age is not a factor as we are never to old to learn. My students range in age from 5 years old to well into their 70’s, many of whom simply want to improve their skills or recapture the joy of making music. The study and enjoyment of music can and often becomes a life long adventure whether its just for fun or as a career.
