Hello! My name is PJ. I was born and raised in Central Florida, and I’ve spent the last 3 years in Central Iowa with my partner Libby, and our lovely and talented 4 year old daughter, Janie Rose. I have been a professional musician for almost 20 years, four of which I spent playing trumpet, guitar, bass, and singing in the US Marine Corp Band. For the last decade, I have made my living as a multi-instrumentalist and singer, entertaining thousands on stages across the country and around the world. Currently, I am the Entertainment Director at Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar in West Des Moines.
Specific methods vary from student to student, depending on the instrument, however the fundamentals that make great musicians are the same. My student get trained in basic music theory concepts that help not just read music, but understand it as a second language. All students will learn a variety of musical styles, from classical to jazz, blues to pop. They will learn how each style is different, what they have in common, and fun ways they can be combined. Becoming a good musician is hard work. One of my main goals is to make sure my students are also learning what they are interested in, so they stay hungry to learn more.
Patience is my favorite virtue, and is imperative when is comes to teaching a subject as beautifully complex as music. Every student learns in a different way, and at different speeds. I aim to find every student's ideal learning pace, and deliver information in a manner that is easiest for them to absorb and retain. We set short term and long term goals based in the musical direction the student wants to go in. The greatest lesson I want every student to learn is how to teach themselves. There is no better feeling than watching a student grow, and take their education into their own hands.
