Bachelor Degree: Texas A&M University
Howdy! My name is Philip and I’m an undergraduate student at Texas A&M University, studying at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. I started playing guitar over ten years ago when I was still in elementary school and haven’t put it down since. I’ve played school concerts, musicals, marching performances, and private shows all around Texas. Every step of the way I’ve had the opportunity to educate my peers and have come to firmly believe that I can be the perfect instructor for you or your child.
I began teaching to some degree in middle school. I would help the school guitar teacher with beginner and advanced guitar during lunch. Most of my responsibility was reinforcing the lessons and practicing alongside individual students who were struggling. While attending high school, I was the only guitarist for the school band and got requests for private lessons from my peers, which I gladly accepted. Those experiences were the first times that I was truly teaching lessons. In 2017, I was eventually picked up by a small music education company and taught lessons through them for about a year before the company closed. Since then, I’ve stuck with small private lessons I found on my own.
When it comes to children, I believe that structure is necessary. So, I usually assign arrangements from a book based on their skill level. In most cases, I use Hal Leonard books and move chronologically from beginner and onward. As students progress, I tend to shift more towards fundamental skills, like how to properly pick certain songs, how scales work, and how to build relevant chords. Eventually, all of this will summate to being a fully capable guitarist. For adults, lessons can be much more free form. If you have experience with guitar then we can go right ahead and find out where your skills lay and build from there. If you've just started, we can build from the bottom, starting with more fundamental skills and then progressing to more personally interesting music. Regardless of the age or methods I apply, I will make sure that you or your child will grow steadily, building confidence in your personal musical abilities, all on the foundations of patience and practice.
My teaching style is based primarily on theory and practice. While every student can and will progress according to their needs, I think it’s important to start with basics, like how to properly hold and play the instrument. Once the basics are down, we’ll usually transition towards learning more music theory, like scales and chord structures, and how to build a song from the ground up. Once someone is passed the beginning stages, lessons will generally transform into a much more personalized experience. You’ll soon find yourself or your child learning interesting and fun songs.
