Overview:
Nice to meet you! My name is Phil, and I'm a violin instructor located right outside Oklahoma City. I've been playing the violin for sixteen years! In 2017, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Conservatory of Music at Baldwin Wallace University with a Bachelor of Arts in Violin Performance. My musical journey has helped me achieve expertise in a wide number of styles and mediums, not limited to orchestral playing, chamber music, opera, musical theater, baroque style, contemporary style, and all nuances of classical and romantic playing. Whether you are preparing for university auditions or just starting out, I guarantee that I can bring your skills to the next level.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began when I was first selected as the concertmaster of the Baldwin Wallace Symphony Orchestra four years ago! It was my responsibility to organize and run sectionals, where I instructed my peers in the art of refining, practicing, and mastering the challenging orchestral repertoire that we tackled on a regular basis. The following year, I started teaching children between ages ten and twelve. My main objectives were (and still are) the correction of form, the establishment of excellent fundamentals, and helping my pupils understand what's so great and exciting about playing music. My students of all levels have been made aware of what is amazing in their playing and, in turn, felt encouraged to bring the other aspects of their musicianship to the same level. My very first young student confided in me that he originally wanted to quit the violin, but my instruction convinced him to keep pursuing music. Needless to say, this was one of the happiest moments of my teaching career!
METHODS USED
I have a patient, focused, goal-oriented teaching style derived from pedagogical practices and my own personal experiences as a musician. Studying with me will help you cultivate technique that is fine and precise, develop a deeper appreciation for music, and most importantly, help you perfect the art of practicing smart. I am particularly inspired by the positive reinforcement methods employed by Suzuki, which successfully encourage and motivate any student. We will be going through a fairly even distribution of scales, etudes, and repertoire that I will carefully select based on your current abilities.
LESSON STYLE
It's not enough to just go through the motions. I insist that my students contemplate their progress, bringing goals and questions to every lesson. I believe that music is as much about you as a person as it is about technique and work ethic, and as such, I care deeply about everybody that I instruct. Remember, impressing me isn't the goal! You will have the best possible experience in my studio if you bring work that you are satisfied with. No matter the level of my student, I will communicate my expectations clearly. Nothing makes me happier than when one of my students realizes just how much they are capable of!
