Overview:
Hi there, my name's Phoebe-- I'm 23 years old, and I'm excited to teach you piano! Whether you're a beginner looking to show off your skills at social events or a more advanced player seeking to refine your technique and musicality, you've come to the right place. For a little bit about me, I was a competitive concert pianist for nearly a decade. I performed at numerous prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Kaufman Center. I was also a first violinist and performed with my school orchestra in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, and Spain. On the side, I spent time as a volunteer musician in nursing homes and performed at a benefit concert to raise money for a neighboring school’s music department.
EXPERIENCE
I started taking piano lessons in first grade and then violin in third grade. I was a competitive pianist for nearly a decade and now teach students. I’ve been teaching piano in New Jersey and the Bay Area for the past nine years. Music has been a huge part of my life, and I want to share that passion with others. Throughout the years, I've had more than 10 music students ranging from age 3 to adult so don't feel limited by your age! Teaching piano is something I've found to be extremely rewarding, and I hope to help you on your own music journey. :)
METHODS USED
I like to first get a sense of what the student is hoping to achieve, whether it be learning how read music, having the skills to impress family and friends, or gaining advanced technical and musical skills. Then, I'll ask about the student's previous experience, learning style, and how much time they're willing to dedicate to learning piano. Afterwards, I'll come up with a plan and discuss it with the student and/or parent and go from there. With beginners, I like to use the James Bastien books because they cover all the basics and progress in a very intuitive way. For intermediate or advanced players, I'll typically start with what they're currently working on and maybe recommend other material if I think there's something else that would be a better fit. My main goal is to pass on what my wonderful piano teacher taught me-- including feedback that you can't just obtain from YouTube videos that will take your music to the next level. It's my job to help you achieve your goals and find your own love of music.
LESSON STYLE
The two most important things to me when it comes to teaching piano are making sure that my students get the fundamentals down and also have fun in the process! There is no shortcut for proper technique so emphasizing the basics from the start creates a strong foundation to grow as a pianist and will allow you to advance much more quickly. Finally, it's important to have fun and enjoy the process. This is the best way to stay motivated and keep working at your craft. With great technique and a positive attitude, you're bound to achieve your musical goals. :)
