BFA, The University of the Arts, Musical Theater/Vocal Performance
Attended the prestigious Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto as a music/strings major
Overview:
Hello! I'm a versatile musician with a wide variety of skills and experience! I'm a classically trained violinist and singer with a background in musical theater. For the past 10 years I've been performing all over the US, Canada and the UK in a variety of facets. I've played with symphony orchestras, performed off-Broadway, fiddled with country and bluegrass bands, played electric violin with rock bands at iconic venues in NYC and LA including The Bitter End, The Viper Room, the Whisky a Go Go and more. I've toured throughout Alaska, Canada and the Pacific Northwest with my previous acoustic folk-pop duo Mama Drinks Bourbon. I currently play fiddle and mandolin with LA based rock band The Sound of Ghosts. Music is my life, my passion and I believe in embracing all genres and styles! I tailor my approach to the individual needs and interests of the student. I can teach voice, violin, ukulele, mandolin, songwriting, and theory and encourage students to explore as many avenues as they like!
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching private Suzuki method violin lessons as well as music theory since I was a teenager. More recently I've coached musical theater singers and youth pop and rock bands. I worked with teenagers in group and individual coaching as a TA for the University of the Arts Pre-College Musical Theater Program. I taught group and individual vocal lessons and was a band leader with Beyond Rock summer camp on Long Island, NY. I currently teach integrated music skills with the Rios Music Project in Carlsbad, CA. I've had experience with everything from classical violin competitions to professional musical theater auditions to music industry showcases. I'm your gal for practical, real-world music skills, including collaboration, improvisation, and songwriting. My strong classical background and technique supports my eclectic musical pursuits, and I encourage my students to practice the basics and build their technique as well as follow their interests to whatever genre and instrument catches their heart! I love working with kids of all ages, and welcome adult students as well!
METHODS USED
I employ a very eclectic, rotating repetoire. For beginning violin students, I use the Suzuki method of ear-training, however I am not married to that curriculum. I prefer to use beginning Suzuki materials in tandem with standard American folk and pop music, in accordance to the student's interests. I am qualified to teach all the way through Suzuki book 10 if the student prefers a more classical approach. Ear training is fundamental in my approach to all instruments and styles. I also encourage practicing improvisation!
LESSON STYLE
I am extremely enthusiastic! Nothing is more rewarding to me than to see my students embrace their love of music, on their own terms. I am a flexible, versatile teacher and am always thinking on my feet. I like to encourage students to set their own goals with my guidance and strive to empower my students with their own sense of musical autonomy. I believe that the more a student is encouraged and empowered to follow their own musical interests, the deeper their commitment to practicing and growing will be! I see myself as a catalyst for students to discover their own talents and passions, by guiding their technical growth and nurturing their individual gifts.
