Bachelor of Music in Flute
Master of Music in Flute
I am an experienced teacher of flute, having taught countless students in a wide age range, and from beginners to college to semi-professional. I enjoy starting students who are just beginning, and I have become known as the go-to teacher for adults of all levels. I love teaching, love music, and the combination is dynamite. I have an uncanny ability to home in on the students' difficulties and perceptions, and am very gratified to be able to help them play to the best of their ability. I teach so they truly understand what they are playing - not just copy or play by rote.
I started teaching when I was 16. I have taught small classes and private lessons for many years. I have developed a methodical system so that all aspects of flute playing are covered in a practical way that shows results from the first lesson. I teach so the student truly understand what they are playing - not just copying or playing by rote. I play for and with the student in duets so that the student can hear and be inspired by a beautiful sound and emulate it,. We play real music together so that inspiration might happen
I have developed my own system and materials for introducing the fingerings and reading music in a methodical way. I write my own simple exercises and songs. I use the Wagner book and a duet book, and appropriate solos depending on the interests of the student. I customize the lessons and go where the student's needs and interests are. Popular songs can be good as solos, and some studnets really enjoy playing Handel, Telemann, and Bach. I have studied with some of the great flutists and incorporate their wisdom for my students.
I believe that music is a gift to humanity. A person may be more or less "talented," but that isn't important to their enjoyment of music. I have a passion for music, having devoted my working life to it, and I can't help but convey and share that. I help students play as well as they can but even more important, listen to and enjoy what they are playing and hearing. So that , no matter if they play for one year or the rest of their lives, they have an enhanced ability to listen, communicate through music, and enjoy it.
