Overview:
I am a classical saxophonist and composer. In 2018, I graduated from University of Arizona with a Bachelor of music degree in music performance: Composition emphasis. In the coming fall 2019, I will become a graduate composition major student and continue my study of saxophone performance and composition in the next two years. In June, 2018, I went Iowa City for the American Saxophone Academy, and had masterclass with Kenneth Tse, and Otis Murphy. Besides music composition, and saxophone performance, I enjoy hiking and riding bikes around the Tucson area.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching in my last year of undergraduate study. By sharing my idea of what I learned from my teacher to my student, I found myself become a better musician and teacher. I encourage my student to listening to different genre of saxophone playing, going to concerts and recitals, because the more the student engaging to the music world, the more they eager to learn. As soon as they start to learn an instrument, it is important to make plans and goals for their future study. I provide my student instructions with saxophone performance and music theory. As the music theory helps them to understand and interpret the music in the right style.
METHODS USED
I teach the beginning students with Essential Elements 2000: Eb Alto Saxophone, Book 1. It has the fingering charts for the student to use in practice. The playful tunes are good to work in lessons. For medium to advanced level, I will use Selected Duets by H. Voxman, Daily Studies for All Saxophones by Trent Kynaston, Ferling Etudes book, etc. I encourage the student to practice both technique (Scales, thirds, long tone exercise, tonguing) and etudes on daily basis. It helps the students building a strong fundamentals of saxophone playing.
LESSON STYLE
I enjoy sharing with my student of what I learned from my teacher and my performing experience. When the student come to our lesson, I encourage him or her starts with a tuning note and scales. It helps the student to warm up their sound and fingers and get ready for the lesson. It is important for all of us to know that there is no hurry during lesson and practice. If the triplets or the sixteenth notes are hard, we could try it couple times and to let the students feel the notes and fingers and until he or she feels comfortable to move on.
