I recently just graduated from Millersville University with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. My main instrument is flute and I have been playing for over the past 14 years. I have had to opportunity to participate in eight Pennsylvania Association for Music Education Band and Orchestra Festivals. Over my years at Millersville University I have participated in almost every ensemble including Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Orchestra, Flute Choir, Flute Quartet and University Choir. I am extremely passionate in what I do and I want to be able to share my love for music with everyone around me!
My experiences with teaching start back with when I was in High School. I slowly started picking up beginner flute and piano students and realized how much I loved teaching music. During my time at Millersville University I have taken multiple methods courses to help advance my teaching. I have taken methods courses starting from percussion all the way to woodwinds and learned about basic beginner instruction. Like I said before I have been playing flute for the past 14 years as well as piano for the past 8 years. The instruction I received at Millersville I know I can definitely incorporate in my lessons. My job is to guide them along the way and show my students how much music is apart of your life. I want each and everyone of my students to have fun and be motivated to learn. I am excited to start working with new students and to see what my future brings me!
When I start with beginner students I don't go to their books right away. I like to sit with my students and have them learn about the parts of the instrument as well as getting to know their instrument. We first learn about embouchure and just get a sound out on their mouth piece. Later on I use Neil A. Kjos Music Company Standard of Excellence Books. I really enjoy using these books with beginners because it gets them started on simple notes and rhythm patterns. I constantly keep my students interested and engaged so they can be successful, but also have fun!
I believe that every teacher says this, but I teach at my students learning pace. Especially for beginners I want them to learn how to play their instrument the first time around, not the second or third time. For me as a teacher I set high expectations for my students so they know exactly what they should strive for. I always give positive feedback and then some strategies to help them along their musical way. I want to be inspirational to my students and be able to adjust to their wants and needs.
