I have had a passion for both music and education for as long as I can remember, and private lesson instruction has been the best way for me to put those to use. I have almost 20 years of experience on the flute, including a bachelor's degree in Flute Performance from Olivet Nazarene University and a master's in music theory from the University of North Texas. In that time, I was given many leadership opportunities including flute choir president and marching band head drum major, allowing me to begin to hone my skills as an educator. I have also worked full time in education as a high school Biology teacher. Above all, my passion is helping others to reach their potential and become the best they can be.
I began teaching flute lesson when I was a sophomore in high school in 2010 by helping middle school students, as well as other high school students, to prepare for band auditions. I taught throughout my time in college as well. I took a short break after graduating with my master's but have since returned to teaching in the Rockwall area. I have also taught in larger group settings, working with marching band flute sections and flute choir. I am also currently working with middle school students in the Rockwall area teaching masterclasses. I have taught all experience levels ranging from students picking up a flute for the first time, to those that are in college studying flute performance.
No matter the level of the student, I think it is important for them to have achievable goals to work towards. I like to have my students always preparing for something, whether it is an audition, recital, or competition. We do this by working on a combination of solos, etudes, fundamentals, duets, and sight-reading activities. I like to make sure that whatever we are working on is at the right ability level for the student and challenges them appropriately. No matter the age or level, I like to make sure that the student's current repertoire includes things they find fun and want to practice.
I believe that it is important to tailor lessons to my individual students, helping to foster a love of music and learning. I think it is important for my students to have goals that they are striving to achieve. They can be big goals, like making it into a college of choice, but I also think small ones are important, like mastering the Bb major scale. We work towards goals and celebrate accomplishments together to help drive each student's passion. I also like to make sure my students feel supported and welcome to come to me with any questions they have.
