Overview:
Music and children are my two greatest passions and I love teaching them both! My musical training began at the age of 9 with piano lessons, and expanded in college to include percussion lessons and performances in several recitals, shows, and concerts. In 2007 I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Education. In 2013 I began my own home business, offering music classes for babies to preschoolers and private piano lessons for beginner and intermediate players. As a wife and a mother of 2 young boys I know first hand how much music can influence a child's development and it's my pleasure to be able to teach music to children.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private lessons for over 2 years and have taught ages 4-18. My belief is that anyone can play the piano, as long as they have the right motivation and are willing to devote time to daily practice sessions. Young students (ages 4-6) are highly encouraged because I believe this is the best time to start and I have extensive experience with this age group because of my weekly interaction with preschoolers through my classes. Older students are just as welcome too because I love working with all ages and it's never too late to learn something new!
METHODS USED
For young beginners I start with a wonderful method book called "Progressive Piano method for young beginners". It begins with note reading which I feel is one of the most important parts of beginner piano playing. The book includes a play-along cd that I use for rhythm practice during lessons to clap and count, because having a steady rhythm is the second most important aspect of playing the piano. Lessons include a mixture of reading and playing music from the book, clapping and counting, flashcards, and musical games. For the older beginner, we learn the notes and how to play and then move on to classical pieces. No matter what kind of music your child wants to play, if they can play classical pieces they will be able to play anything. That is the focus for developing good techniques, and then we can move on to styles and songs of their choice.
LESSON STYLE
As a teacher my goal is to push the students toward their best potential, guide them along the way, and make sure they have a full grasp of note reading, rhythm, expression, technique, and dynamics. And since I only see them once a week, the real work takes place at home with the parents, so for the younger players I teach them but also teach their parents how to push and motivate them at home. If the parents are really motivated, the student has a much higher chance of moving forward and really learning how to play.

Rachel is very nice and patient with my 8 year old daughter. My daughter has picked up the notes and musicality very well thanks to Rachel's techniques. I believe my daughter really enjoys the lessons. Rachel is professional and family oriented. We look forward to both our girls learning a lot.
