Overview:
I am a lover of sharing music with students and fellow musicians. I have been playing for more than 30 years and have been teaching flute either privately or as adjunct faculty for over 15 years. I studied flute at a performing arts high school and at Arkansas State under Joe Bonner. I currently am keeping my hand in orchestral performance in the NIH Community Orchestra on bassoon and am also performing as a flute soloist at different venues. I excel in the classical music genre and am currently working on my 20th Century music skills. The Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras are my specialties.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since my undergrad years starting in 2001 as adjunct faculty at Walnut Ridge Elementary School until 2004. Since then I have taught privately at students homes part time. I believe that weekly lessons are the most beneficial for a students learning and productivity. I also believe that a combination of encouragement, praise, and level appropriate music, be it classical, method books, or popular music are imperative for success in learning music and enjoying it. I also teach age appropriate music theory in my lessons as this is just as important as the music. With the learning of theory comes a greater understanding of the music being learned and makes the student able to better interpret music on their own.
METHODS USED
For younger beginning student I prefer to use Essential Elements for a good foundation. For older beginners I prefer the Rubank Method. Once the basics are grasped I add in level appropriate solo music. As the students progress I move either into the Rubank Method for younger students or the Trevor Wye method for the older students. I also like to utilize duets and other ensemble pieces if I have multiple students. I like for my students to keep a practice journal so that they can see their progress and I can see the areas that the students need to work on. I encourage questions and individuality in the lessons for my students.
LESSON STYLE
I believe that students excel in an encouraging and praise filled environment. I also believe that students should be taught how to practice so that they can excel. I tailor each lesson according to the students needs and do my best to instill in them a love for Music. If a student is getting frustrated I am not afraid of taking a break and working on something fun that engages the student. I love to see students learning to love music and try to make sure that every lesson has an element of fun and praise in it.
