ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Masters in Education, Brooklyn College

BM in Music Education and Vocal Performance, C.W. Post Long Island University

Brooklyn Preparatory School of Music

Overview:

I am a classically-trained singer and piano player  with over 10 years of private teaching experience.  I have performed in several recitals including the Early Boston Music Festival.  In addition, I have performed with sveral different choirs throughout the years. Though my specialty is classical and opera, I can aso teach Broadway, pop, and jazz styles as well.  I welcome all student levels from beginner to advance and my teaching philosophy is to tailor the lessons for every student in order to help them acheive their full potential.

EXPERIENCE
I have been singing since the age of nine and playing the piano since I was thirteen. I started at the Brooklyn College conservatory and through opportunities have performed at different venues. I spent almost 20 years in private study though my educational background including through high school to graduate school. I have studied under several well known performers including Valerie Coates, Gene Bullard, Gerald Brown, and Paul Kim.  As well as I have been a private instructor for over 10 years. As I teach students, I constantly change my approaches depending on the needs of my students. I encourage my students to practice and think about how to approach new materials to make it less frustrating for my students. In addition, I use familiar melodies which includes classical and modern selections to help support the learning. I also allow my students to decide what they want to work on, but in exchange that they must complete certain tasks to help them develop their skills.
METHODS USED

I have taken several courses in different music pedagogy and techniques as well as genres of music.  Using the knowledge from these courses I have been enabled to form my philosophy of teaching to incorporate different teaching styles to help my students.  I feel that the main prupose of these lessons is to aid the students in their needs and wants whether it is understanding certain parts of music theory, techniques, or just understanding the basics with a piece of music.  Also, my students feel that they are able to come into a lesson with some ideas about what they want to get out of lesson while including my thoughts on what they need to work on.

LESSON STYLE

My style is very interactive in not teaching the students, but demonstrating what are the proper ways to approach different praticing techniques and repertoire selections. With my vocal lessons I have students do proper warm-up techniques and various scales before we begin working on vocal selections.  Afterwards I use repetition with the repertoire in order to help the students with skills that are needed to perform any particular piece including intonation, diction, and breathing.

For my piano students, I use different method and technique books in order to help my students learn the basics.  This includes how to properly read their sheet music so that they can pratice their skills by themselves.  I also use repetition and demonstrate different pratice skills so that my students can further advance their piano skills. For both vocal and piano lessons I do demonstrate difficult parts of the music in order to help my students understand the music selection that they are working on.
