Overview:
I'm a licensed teacher that enjoys sharing my passion for music. In December 2016, I graduated from Lipscomb University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music Education. Performing as part of Cedar Creek Community Band, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Orchestra Pit has given me a variety of experiences to inform my teaching. This has taught me much of the psychology of music and performance. Each student has their own personal goals for their exploration of music. The variety of my experience allows me to work with any goals my students have in regards to music.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private lessons for about eight years. My experience teaching in different classrooms helps me work with a large variety of students with just as much variety of skill levels. The most important part of music is connecting with the pieces you play. I provide students with the opportunity to influence certain parts of repertoire that they learn. They may pick a few pieces or songs while I help them build the skills they need to attain for advancement. As they learn exciting works, students have the chance to apply them to the skills they need. I'm interested in any student and whatever goals they wish to meet!
METHODS USED
I work with Rubank or any method books provided by their band instructor. There will be supplemental materials, especially for more advanced students, that are instrument specific such as etudes and technical exercises. We will continue focusing on band literature, contemporary, classical, or solo literature depending on the goals of the students and their interests. While there are some general methods, it is best to meet the student where their needs are and tailor the specific methods to those needs.
LESSON STYLE
Fostering the interest in music into a passion within my students is the ideal teaching situation. This is why I place importance on listening to the student's goals to make decisions for certain parts of the curriculum. There are technical and theoretical skills that must be learned, but the students have some choices in materials. Meeting them where they want to be is some of the strongest motivation I can provide for my students. Whatever the goals may be whether recreational or professional development, I strive to provide the best path for my students.
